Mechanical Menace |
|
Stage 1 |
Location: | Taulin Desert (Descent) (15, 11) |
You walk off the top of the Ridge and start your way back down to the Taulin Sands below. On the way, you see an odd metallic flash. |
|
Just off the center of the area you find a tall metallic pillar covered in deflector dishes. A Technician is busy connecting power cables to it as you arrive. The two heavily armed Taulin Guards level their rifles at you.
They glance at each other nervously. 'You just walked off the Ridge, nobody just walks off that Ridge. Who are you?' You see real fear in their eyes, so you take a long deep breath and talk slowly and clearly. You simply say that you are traveling through the area. The Guards look at each other again, 'Ok, you better come with us. You first, go down into the Generator Chamber and see Captain Thomson.'' You then see both guards snap the safeties off their rifles. They are not simply asking you to go with them. |
|
|
Stage 2 |
Location: | Taulin Desert (Generator Chamber) (2, 2) |
The two Guards lead you down through the Gate into the small dry cave chamber. In the center is a large generator humming away to itself. Another Technician is monitoring the power levels of the generator on a side panel. Standing next to him is a Taulin City Guard in battered armour. He looks oddly familiar, but you can't quite place him. |
|
The Captain turns round and is surprised to see you standing there with the two Guards. 'Ummm, what is happening?' he asks, directing his question to the two men behind you. One of them pipes up, 'This Unit just walked off the Ridge, I thought you would probably want to know.' The Captain sags visibly, then takes out a Datapad and scans you. There is a shrill bleep. He frowns, then his eyes snap onto you.
He looks past you at the Guards, 'Have you scanned this Unit?' You feel the Guards stiffen behind you, 'Ummm - no... We didn't think it was necessary. The Unit came off the Ridge, so how could...' The Captain holds up his hand, 'I know you didn't think. If you had done so, you would have seen the file I wrote detailing how this Unit helped safeguard Taulin City from an attack by the Phantom Stalkers a while back. You know, Taulin City - the City you are supposed to be protecting? You then repay this Units service to Taulin and it's citizens by escorting them at gun point for no reason at all!' The Captains eyes burn with anger. You hear the Guards behind you begin to shift.
'Also, why are you here in the first place?', the Guards behind you make noncommittal noises. The Captain continues, 'How about, you go and start protecting the Technician whilst he is setting up the Bio Scanner from the vicious cybernetic hornets in this area?' The Guards know that they are in trouble, but can't figure out why. They agree slowly. The Captain looks at the roof of the cave, 'Soooo, you're both down here talking to me... Who is outside protecting the technician, you know, from those vicious cybernetic hornets?' You don't need to see the Guards faces to know that they are panicking. You simply hear them turn on their heel and run back to their post. |
|
|
Stage 3 |
Location: | Taulin Desert (Generator Chamber) (2, 2) |
The Captain of the Taulin City Guard smiles broadly at you and shakes you roughly by the hand. 'Good to see you again Unit.' |
|
'Its been a while since you went out after those Mutant Spear Hunters in Phantom Lake (Outer). But I hope the Taulin Guard Helm was of use to you. It's a good helm, we need it in our job. I'm pleased to meet up with you again, especially as we have a problem. Taulin is under threat again, but it's from an odd Entity called a Gribbly. Hundreds of these things are suddenly appearing, we just don't know where they are coming from. We assumed it was maybe in the Ridge. We never venture onto it as it's on the edge of the Dahon tribal lands. You want nothing to do with them, they are a serious bunch the Dahon. But we leave them alone and they leave us alone, which is good enough for me.'
'We are setting up a Bio Scanner here, we need it to be as high up as we can get it so it can get a good scan range. With the Scanner we can try to find out where these things are nesting. This is as close to the Dahon lands as we dare get. But we got attacked by those nasty Hornets. We need that Scanner up and running as soon as possible, but those damnable things are not making it easy.
Can you find a way to deal with them. Shooting them does not seem to be doing any good. |
|
|
Stage 4 |
Location: | Taulin Desert (Descent) (15, 11) |
You step into the bright sunlight again. You have to shield your eyes momentarily until they adjust. It is then that you notice the buzz. You see the Two Guards shoulder their weapons. |
|
One of the Guards gives you a sideways look, 'The Hornets are attacking again. To be honest we could use a hand.'
You see a wave of Brass Hornets bearing down on you, you must kill 80 Brass Hornets to help the Guards and protect the Bio Scanner. |
|
|
Stage 5 |
Location: | Taulin Desert (Descent) (15, 11) |
The Two Taulin Guards are firing at the wave of attacking Brass Hornets, 'Give us a hand and kill 80 Brass Jacket Hornets!' |
|
As the Guards kill the last one, you survey the bodies of the Hornets littering the floor. Blood soaks into the stony ground all around you. The other Guard kicks a Hornet in frustration, 'This is not working! They just keep coming. We just don't know what we are dealing with.' He turns to you 'Would you go find out what has annoyed these things. We can't carry on like this, eventually we will run out of ammo!'
You must find out more information on the Brass Jacket Hornets, or the Taulin Guards will be overwhelmed. |
|
|
Stage 6 |
Location: | Taulin Desert (Descent) (7, 10) |
In an protected fold of the Descent you find a large cave. From within you hear a faint buzzing sound. |
|
The cave is wide and much larger than you first thought. You realize quite quickly that you are not in a large cavern but a winding corridor arching deep into the Ridge. As you get deeper the sound of buzzing gets louder.
You are not that far down when you see your first Brass Jacket. You hide quickly behind a stalagmite and it flies past. After a few moments you risk going deeper into the cave.
You turn a corner to see a massive cavern of astonishing size, bio luminescent fungus lights it up. Within the ghostly glow you see thousands of Brass Jackets. The sight takes your breath away. There is no way that the two Taulin Guards can deal with this countless army before you. There must be something that the Guards have done to the Hornets that has enraged them
You must find out more about the Entity behavior if you are to save the Guards. |
|
|
Stage 7 |
Location: | Taulin Desert (Descent) (7, 10) |
From within the Cave you hear the army of Brass Jackets, you need to find out more about this strange Entity if you are to protect the Guards. |
|
You don't have to wait long for a Brass Jacket to come out the Nest. You quickly scan it with the Entity Finder and check the readings on the Entity Encyclopedia. After a few seconds you get the Brass Hornet Profile.
You read down the profile, your eye catches one paragraph in the record. 'The Brass Jacket is a highly sociable Entity. If it feels that their nest or another Brass Jacket is in danger they will attack that threat. If they are killed, the Brass Jacket will release a pheromone that will warn other Brass Jackets of the threat. This can be especially hazardous if you are nearby the Brass Jacket nest...' The profile continues but you stop reading, you imagine the Taulin Guards shooting the first Brass Jacket they see. That would just bring more Brass Jackets and the cycle will continue until the Guards are dead and no longer a threat to the Nest.
You see a link in the Encyclopedia and grin. It says, Brass Jacket Friend. You click the link and find a Blueprint on how to gain positive pheromones from the Hornet. You must build the Hornet Friend and give it to the Taulin Guards back at the Bio Scanner as quickly as possible.
You receive 1 x Brass Hornet Friend Blueprint |

|
Stage 8 |
Location: | Taulin Desert (Descent) (15, 11) |
The Taulin Guards are standing ready for the next wave of Brass Jackets, 'Have you found out anything about these Hornets yet?' |
|
You give them the Hornet Friend bottle, they look at it in astonishment. 'Ummm, what's this?' Before you can answer Captain Thomson walks out of the Generator Chamber Gate. He looks at the sky and barks curtly, 'Situation Report.' The two Guards give him the Scent Bottle in confusion. 'This is what he gave us. Dunno what it is though.' The Captain opens it up and smells the scent. 'Hmm, an odd perfume. But not unpleasant, what's it for?'
You explain that when the Brass Hornets are killed they release an pheromone that tells other Brass Jackets that you are a danger. You also tell them that there are countless thousands of Brass Jackets right under their feet. To protect yourself you will need to tell the Hornets you are their friend. You point to the bottle and explain that that perfume will convince the Brass Jackets that you are not a threat. At the moment, the more Hornets you kill, the more will be drawn here. It's just a matter of time before you are swarmed literally.
The Technician who was connecting the power lines to the Bio Scanner grabs the scent bottle and covers his face in it. 'I don't care how it smells, I don't wanna die on this job. Thanks Unit' The others do the same. The Captain looks at the blood covering the area and orders the Guards to burn it to destroy any pheromones left on the ground. As they were finishing another wave of Brass Jackets converge on the Bio Scanner.
The Captain screams, 'Don't fire, everyone back into the Generator Chamber.' From within the Chamber you hear the Hornets buzzing around for a few moments, then fly off. The Technician pokes his head out the door, 'Ok, they're gone. It also looks like they left the Bio Scanner as well. That never happened before. I think we need to synthesis this scent if we are gonna maintain the Bio Scanner in the future. Good job Unit!'
Captain Thomson gives the two Guards a sideways look, 'Yes, good job UNIT!' What happened to the discipline of the Taulin Guard? Never fire unless absolutely necessary?' He rounds on them, 'I don't want to hear who shot first, or how creepy the Hornets were. You nearly killed us all with your stupidity. Well no more. I am fed up with your constant deficiencies. I have a job for you two.'
There was a distinctly menacing tone to the last sentence. The Captain turns back to you, 'I have a favor to ask you, I need to report back to Taulin about our progress here. But can you scout the area for the source of the Gribbly threat?' He looks over your shoulder, you tell him that there is only a few Gribbly Spawn wandering around there. But no nest, they must have got there through the cave system below. Which means that the source must be in the other direction.
The Captain nods, 'Ok, but I have one more thing to ask you, take these two idiots with you. Let me introduce Bob and Frank, it'll be an impromptu training exercise. If they live, they can retain their jobs. The two Guards quail at his words but he gives them a withering glare, 'I'm sure both of my officers will be willing to accompany you in the search.' The tone of his words mean that it was not a rhetorical question. Frank blurts up, 'I can't go, I have nothing to eat. I didn't know we were traveling deep into the desert. I haven't prepared for that.' The Captain looks at him down his nose, 'Ok', Frank breaths out in relief. The Captain digs in his Backpack, and hands you a Sandwich, 'Take this for Frank. Wouldn't want him to go hungry now would we.' Frank stares at the Sandwich in disbelief. He starts to speak, but thinks better of it.
You must find the source of the Gribbly threat, maybe the source of this threat took the lost Dahon tribesmen. It's worth checking out.
You receive 583,444 Xp + 10 Skill Points + 1 Franks Sandwich |
