At the End of the Tunnel |
Stage 1 |
Location: | Rah Kain (West Branch) (13, 14) |
You are astonished to be accosted by a small three-eyed mutant. |
The small mutant stares at you, then shakes it's two fingered fist at you. 'I beat up that other one, I can take you down as well!' You freeze, whoever would be defeated by this munchkin would be weak indeed or sick. You grab the wretch and shake it. It rattles around in the air like a doll.
It yells, 'Stooop! What do you want?' You drop the Vermin at your feet. As it tries to escape you crush it into place with your heel. You ask through gritted teeth who he beat up. The Vermin whimpers, 'It was a Golgesh, it's name was Glux. He was returning to the foul Overlords to deliver its Box of Goodies. I jumped him and took the box from him. I'm sure the Golgesh will pay highly for it's return. We took them into the Overflow till we can contact the Golgesh and ransom them both.'
You ask him where this Overflow is, he squirms for a second but you simply press down. You hear its ribcage creaking under the pressure. 'Aaaaall riggght...' It flails it's hands around in desperation to draw breath. You lift your foot slightly, 'I'll tell you. The Overflow is South West from here. But that will not do you any good. We got it Guarded with a Needle Turret, so only we can get past it.' The Vermin then laughs at you.
You stare at the wretched thing, it's not that bright. So it must have some sort of key to get past the turret. You reach down and grab it by it throat and shake it harshly again. It gurgles in your grasp fighting for breath. It opens its mouth wide instinctively to get air and odd green slug falls out onto the floor. You drop the Vermin and pick up the squirming thing, it then gives off a high pitched squeak.
You are not paying attention to the Vermin and it scampers away, 'That Squeaker will not do you any good, it will dry out and die before you will get to the Needle Turret. We still have Glux and the Box. Bye bye, ha ha ha ha ha ha.'
You receive 1 x Squirming Squeaker
You guess that the odd slug will have something to do with the Needle Turret. Judging from the Vermin's confidence you don't have long to find out. |

Stage 2 |
Location: | Rah Kain (West Branch) (2, 23) |
In front of the Access to the Overflow a strange living turret swings to face you. |
You hear the odd turret click loudly as it prepares to fire at you. Suddenly unsure you hold the Noggin Key in front of you. The Squeaker Worm suddenly starts to shiver and gives off a high pitched shriek. The Needle Turret flinches at the sound and turns away from you.
You can enter the Overflow Access now and look for Glux. |
Stage 3 |
Location: | Rah Kain (Overflow) (2, 2) |
In a small cramped chamber Glux sits chained to the floor, shivering against the cold. |
Glux despondently raises his head at the sound of your footfalls. His eyes go wide when he sees you, he raises his chained hands to you. 'Do you have the key?' he whispers.
You will need to find the Vermin Chain Key to free Glux. |
Stage 4 |
Location: | Rah Kain (Overflow) (2, 2) |
Grux sits chained to the floor of the Overflow, 'Do you have the Key?' |
You slip the steel key into the lock, it snaps open and clatters to the floor. Grux hobbles to his feet, 'Lets get out of here. I know a short cut to the Line, meet me there. I have another favor to ask.' |
Stage 5 |
Location: | Rah Kain (Line) (21, 8) |
Grux sits exhausted on the slimy floor of the Line. He gives a rattling cough and waves you over. |
The little Golgesh slowly shakes his head. 'I'm not getting any better, but I'm not getting any rest I suppose. But I want to thank you for coming to get me. Which of the Overseers send you?' You look blankly down at Grux and say, 'Sorry, but what's an Overseer exactly?'
Grux's eyes glaze over. He looks through you as he processes the implications of your words. He speaks as if in a dream, 'So nobody sent you. Nobody cared even after all my work.' In his face you see disappointment change into betrayal. Then he suddenly nods curtly at you, 'Thats not true is it? You cared enough to come for me, I am grateful for that. I think I shall stick to who has proven loyal. You have proven more loyal to me than the Dominion. That loyalty demands payment, I shall pay my debt to you. I guess now that you are not of the Golgesh. I shall help you where I can. But first I need to be made well.'
He looks around and shifts slowly behind you, 'I am not normally allowed in this area of the Conduit. We need to get through here without being seen. All technology of the Golgesh is alive. This has advantages, but also means that the Units draw resources constantly from Rah Kain. So it can only have so many active at one time. We need to thin down the Eyestalks numbers so we can get through. If you destroy 300 Eyestalks, Rah Kain will need to grow another batch to replace them. I can run through then unobserved. |
Stage 6 |
Location: | Rah Kain (Line) (21, 8) |
Grux waits for you to return, 'Have you culled 300 Eyestalks?' |
Grux smiles grimly at you, 'Then lets go, there is no time to lose. Rah Kain will not know immediately that the Eyestalks have gone. But it will and soon. Meet me in the Feed, there is something I need there. |
Stage 7 |
Location: | Rah Kain (Feed) (13, 6) |
There is a low hum in the air. You look around for Drones but see none of the bug things flying around. Grux sits coughing weakly on the slime in front of you. He does not look well at all. |
He smiles weakly up at you, 'We Golgesh are made to alter ourselves and serve the Dominion. I can't seem to shift this sickness, but as a Golgesh I can make more of myself. I mean that literally! There is an Golgesh in this area called a Flow Blower. It makes sure that the airborne nutrients are pushed up into Rah Kain. Golgesh do not waste a resource, no matter how small. So the Flow Blower is constantly breathing nourishment, it takes a small portion of this for itself. It therefore is very healthy. Unlike me. I don't have a lot of time to explain, just go get me the Flow Blower Essence. It will be easier just to show you.' |
Stage 8 |
Location: | Rah Kain (Feed) (13, 6) |
Grux waits for you eagerly to return, 'Have you got the Flow Blower Essence for me?' |
Grux takes the bowl in both hands and looks into the green gloopie soup inside. 'Mmmmm, it looks delicious.' He licks his lips and drains it completely. Sitting down he hugs his belly and hums contentedly to himself.
After a few moments his fever lifts and his cough vanishes completely. Then his eyes snap open... he suddenly starts to giggle...
You watch astonished as his skin begins to harden and armored plates start growing across his body. Grux gets to his feet in a smooth fluid movement like a cat. He stops and laughs, 'This is great, our DNA is keyed to react to Golgesh organic signatures. It is through these signatures that we Golgesh evolve new abilities and new ways to serve the Dominion. Though it is forbidden to do what I have just done as the evolution is not always beneficial. We have very clever DNA Tenders that predict which is the best signature for the individual Golgesh. I just wanted to be well again, I didn't expect to get all this!'
He beams up at you.
I owe you another debt my friend. We should go before they get curious why the nutrient flow has decreased suddenly.
